Hard-pack & berm removal in Fairbanks
In Fairbanks the snow that causes trouble usually isn't the fresh four inches. It's the ridge the street plow leaves across the end of your driveway, and the layer of packed snow and ice that builds up after weeks of driving over it. By midwinter that hard-pack can be several inches thick, rutted, and uneven, and a shovel won't touch it.
Good Hand finds a local crew with the right equipment for the job. Hard-pack and frozen berms usually take a loader, a heavier plow, or a grader blade — not a pickup with a light blade. When you send your request, we pass along exactly what you're dealing with so the crew who prices it knows what to bring.
Tell us three things: about how long the driveway is, whether the problem is the berm, the hard-pack, or both, and whether you're blocked in right now. A photo from the street and one looking up the drive is usually enough. If there's a culvert, a septic lid, landscaping, or a gravel surface you don't want torn up, mention it.
You're not booked when you describe the snow. We bring back one all-in price, and you approve it before anyone is scheduled. The crew is paid their agreed amount after you confirm the work is done.
Some homeowners clear hard-pack once in late winter before breakup so meltwater doesn't pond on the drive. Others need the berm opened after every city plow pass. Either way, say what you need and how often.
If the snow has to leave the property entirely because there's nowhere left to push it, say so. Hauling snow off-site is a bigger job than pushing it to the side of the lot, and the crew needs to price it that way.
We cover Fairbanks, North Pole (99705), Chena Ridge, Goldstream, the Farmers Loop and Steese areas, Badger Road, and homes near Fort Wainwright and Eielson. If no crew covers your road, we'll tell you so rather than leave you guessing.
What affects the price
- Driveway length and width
- How thick the hard-pack is, and whether there's ice under it
- Size of the street berm and how frozen it is
- Equipment needed (loader or heavier plow)
- Where the snow can be pushed or whether it has to be hauled off
- How soon you need it, especially if you're blocked in
You see one all-in price before anything is booked.
FAQs
Do you handle hard-pack?
Yes. We look for crews with equipment heavy enough for packed snow and ice, and we tell them about the hard-pack up front so the price reflects it.
Can you just open the berm at the end of my driveway?
Yes. Berm-only requests are common after the city plows. Say so in your request and include a photo from the street.
Will it damage my gravel driveway?
It can if the blade digs in. Tell us the surface is gravel and anything to avoid, and we pass that on to the crew.
I'm blocked in today. What do I do?
Use urgent help or put "blocked in today" at the start of your request. We look for the first crew who can come instead of collecting several prices.
