The North Pole City Council voted 5 to 1 on Monday to give businesses inside city limits a leg up when the city takes bids for some goods and services. City staff will also make a reasonable effort to see whether a qualified North Pole business can do the job before looking outside town, though normal procurement rules still apply and the city isn't required to pick the local option. The city's contract attorney and Mayor Larry Terch both raised concerns before the vote. The News-Miner has the full story on the council vote.
Our take: we can see both sides of this one. Keeping city dollars with the folks who pay sales tax and keep the lights on along the Richardson makes a lot of sense in a town this size. Then again, anybody who has priced a big repair in the Interior knows quotes can swing a long way, and a little competition keeps everybody sharp. We'll be curious to see how it plays out the first time a big contract comes up.
That's a lot like how we think about home projects. When you ask Good Hand Co. for handyman help or snow removal around Fairbanks and North Pole, we look for local providers first and get you a price before anything gets started. And if the house needs a good cleaning before the holidays roll in, The Alaska Cleaning Company will put together a quote for you.
